Educated at Aberdeen and Edinburgh. Associated with the Jacobite physician Archibald Pitcairne. Served briefly as a tutor in Edinburgh, but moved to London to practice medicine (1701). Returned to Scotland following a breakdown (1705), but moved back to London once he recovered (c.1715). Moved to Bath (1718). Practiced medicine there, while also publishing numerous medical and philosophical treatises.
