Widely famous as a philosopher and geographer in Edinburgh, as well as co-founder of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh (1681). Resided briefly in London (1662), and more lengthily in the mid- to late-1680s, when a brief conversion to Roman Catholicism forced him to leave Scotland. Physician to James VII. Admitted Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of London (1686).
