Worked in a dispensary and as an apprentice surgeon in Glasgow (1735-1739). Moved to London (1739). Enrolled as ship's surgeon, and served in the West Indies (1740-42). Returned to London (1744) and established a surgical practice. Awarded MD from Aberdeen (1750). While continuing to practice, he published a wide range of literary works spanning poetry, prose, drama and satire, making him one of the most celebrated writers in the city. Especially known for his novels 'The Adventures of Roderick Random' (1748), 'The Adventures of Peregrine Pickle' (1751) and 'The Adventures of Ferdinand Count Fathom' (1753), as well as his posthumous 'The Expedition of Humphry Clinker' (1771). Began travelling extensively in Europe (1763), and left England for the last time in 1769. Died in Italy (1771).
