Completed and apprenticeship in Edinburgh (1742), and briefly worked there. Joined '45 rising. Lived in France during the later 1740s, but moved to London (1750) and began exhibiting his work there. Travelled in Europe (1760-1765). Director of the Society of Artists (1768-1773). Moved to Paris (1775), but returned to London (1780) and enjoyed a degree of royal patronage for the remainder of his life.
