Graduated from University of Edinburgh. Douglas then worked as a surgeon in navy from 1756 before returning to Edinburgh where he graduated MD in 1775. Douglas settled in London with intention of practicing midwifery. He spent several years as physician to Charity for Delivering Poor Married Women at their Own Houses. Admitted to licentiate of the Royal College of Physicians in 1776. Douglas married wealthy and gave up his medical practice to travel. He returned to Scotland but returned to England at an unknown date where he died at Buxton, Derbyshire in 1806.
