Migrated to London by 1729 where he was apprenticed to James Douglas (obstetrician & anatomist). He studied in Leiden and received his MD from the University of Rheims(France. Douglas returned to London by 1739 and established himself as a physician and man-midwife. He lived in Southamptson Street, Covent Garden until 1745 before moving to Henrietta Street. By 1746 Douglas had become the physician-in-ordinary to Frederick, prince of Wales. Appointed man-midwife (1749) and physician to the Middlesex Hospital (1750) but resigned both posts in 1752. Douglas had returned to Scotland by 1758.
