Attended University of St Andrews graduating in 1722. Entered University of Edinburgh to pursue career in commerce. Whilst in the Netherlands heard medical lectures in Leiden and changed career path. Graduated MD at Leiden in 1730, Pringle completed his medical studies in Paris. He returned to, and established his practice in, Edinburgh. As personal physician to the earl of Stair given post in military. Left physician-general post in 1748, and subsequently published ‘Observations on the Diseases of the Army’ (1752) Pringle settled in London 1748 where he continued to practice medicine and publish. He was a council member of the Royal Society (1753), LRCP in 1758, FRCP in 1763, speciali gratia, He was physician to the queen in 1761 and president of the Royal Society (1772) In 1766 Pringle was created a baronet & physician-in-ordinary to the king in 1774. Illness led to brief return to Edinburgh (1778?) but Pringle returned to London in 1781, Buried in St James's Church, Piccadilly
