Studied medicine at University of Edinburgh and graduated MD 1749. Set up practice in Newcastle-upon-Tyne but moved to London 1775/6 and became consultant physician to Medical Asylum in Welbeck Street. Became licentiate of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh (1764) although does not seem to have practiced there. Wrote treatises on natural philosophy but also published medical tracts, on topics of military hygiene, childhood diseases & efficacy of bath waters
