Educated at Edinburgh. Moved to London during the '45 rising. Lodged with his brother, Armstrong, John, and assisted in his practice. Developed an interest in paediatrics following the birth of his first child (1758). Opened dispensary for the infant poor (1769), and obtained MD, possibly from Aberdeen, in the same year.
