Educated at St Andrews, as well as numerous other institutions in Italy and France. Incorporated at Oxford, and admitted to the Royal College of Physicians of London (1660). Admitted to the Royal Society (1663), but expelled for non-involvement (1675). Worked for several years with his great-uncle, Wedderburn, John, as physician to the duke and duchess of York, but retired his post and settled in Edinburgh by mid-1680s.
