Minister of Monifieth (1624) and St Andrews (1626). Fled to England following the Covenanting revolution (1638), and formally deposed (1639). Appointed to a lectureship at Newcastle-upon-Tyne (1639). Fled Newcastle during Second Bishops'War (1640), but remained there after Scottish intervention in English Civil War, and was imprisoned in Edinburgh after the Scots took Newcastle (1644). Freed, and supported Montrose's rising (1645). Fled to Europe (1646). Returned to Newcastle as lecturer and vicar of St Andrew's church (1661). Appointed bishop of Edinburgh (1662).
