Knighted by 1599. Took seat in Parliament as Lord Balmerino (1603). Accompanied James VI to England in 1603 and given various court appointments. Became involved in the plan to make the bishop of Vaison a cardinal which led to accusations by James VI who summoned Balmerino. Met in a private interview at Royston (1608) where he was arraigned before the Privy Council, Balmerino was scapegoated and sent as a prisoner to Scotland (via Newcastle/Berwick, etc.). Died at his estates
