First earl of Carnwath. Initially supported the dissidents but quickly switched support in favour of the king. Admitted to Scottish privy council (1638). Joined king in York (1639) during first bishops' war. Attended King Charles at his court in Oxford (1643). Participated in invasion of England to restore Charles II which ended in disaster at the Battle of Worcester (1651), captured and imprisoned in the Tower of London where he died in 1654. Buried in St Margaret's Church, Westminster
