Began military career in Scotland and came into England in 1688. 1694 commission into Sir John Gibson's regiment (28th foot), newly formed at Portsmouth. Appointed town-major in Portsmouth (1702). Accompanied regiment to Ireland and then Spain, rising through the military ranks. Retired in 1749. In 1720 Dalzell was appointed treasurer of the Sun Fire Office, the first London insurance house to undertake fire risks, as part of a group of Scottish investors. Died at Craig's Court, London in 1758 and buried in St Martin-in-the-Fields.
