Attended University of Glasgow. Spent three years (1721-3) at the military academy of Vaudeuil, Paris. Entered army in 1726. Increasingly involved in public affairs in 1730s. Elected fellow of Royal Society (1732) and made a gentleman of bedchamber to Frederick, Prince of Wales (1733). One of seven representative peers and was an attentive members of the upper house when in London. Joined various military campaigns across Europe (Austria, Germany, France, Scotland, etc.) Returned to London house on Upper Brook Street in 1749. Died December of that year and was buried in Scotland.
