Styled 3rd Lord of Cromarty (Cromartie), master of Macleod. Became Lord Tarbat (1714). Joined 1745 rising and captured at Dunrobin and taken to the Tower of London. Brought to trial, admitted guilt but sentenced to death with estates and title forfeited. Saved through intervention of wife and a number of magnate supporters. Secured a pardon in October 1749. Permitted to leave the Tower in 1748 and took up lodgings in Ladyhill, Devon, and later in Northcote, near Honiton. Died Poland Street, Westminster (1766) and buried at St James's, Westminster.
