First Viscount of Dundee and Lord Grahame of Claverhouse, nicknamed Bonnie Dundee. Enjoyed a successful military career under Prince William of Orange. Summoned to London to attend court (1679) and enjoyed a close association with James, Duke of York between 1679-82. Regular visitor to court at London and Windsor and often travelled throughout England with James. Became privy councillor (1683). 1680s returned to Scotland with task to ensure that the local citizenry swore oaths of loyalty according to the test acts. Increasingly spent more time on Scottish estates but frequently travelled to London, and Bath. Continued military role, participating in the highland rising and was killed in battle. Has a mixed legacy.
