First earl of Ancram. Appointed Groom of the Bedchamber shortly before 1603. Forced to go abroad 1607-8 but shortly after return appointed Gentlemen of the Bedchamber to Prince Charles. Also appointed (but resigned) Captain of the King’s Guard in Scotland. Career at court prospered after ascension of Charles I. Sat in English Parliament for Aylesbury (1625) and for Preston (1628-9). Retained position of gentleman of the bedchamber until 1644. Execution of King forced Ker to abandon London, going first to his son's house of Newbattle and then settling in Amsterdam. Died in Amsterdam 1654.
