Third earl of Marchmont. Entered Parliament as representative of Berwick-upon-Tweed (1734). Had to leave House of Commons when he succeeded earldom. One of sixteen Representative Peers (1750). Made Lord Keeper of the Great Seal of Scotland (1764). Died at house in Hemel Hempstead 1794.
