Sixth Earl of Marischal. Educated at Marischal College, continuing education in France. Returned to Scotland via the English court where he spend two years. Supported covenanters and supplied men to the Scottish army. Visited troops at Newcastle. Raised a troop of horse to help in liberating Charles I (1648). Fought at battle of Preston. Appointed to office of marshal of Scotland. Refused to surrender castle of Dunnottar, captured at Alyth and sent to London. Imprisoned for a number of years, though given freedom of the city. Excluded from Scottish Act of Pardon (1654). Exact release date is unknown but returned to Scotland 1659 where he died in 1671.
