First marquis of Montrose. Studied at University of St Andrews before continuing military education in France. Attended court in 1636 but was supposedly slighted at a meeting by Charles I. Returned to Scotland and initially supported Covenanters. Eventually became disillusioned and drifted towards royalist cause, joining the king in England (1643). Made lieutenant-general in Scotland (1644), won several stunning victories but ultimately defeated, resulting in order to disband his army (1646). Montrose sailed into exile where he continued to seek help for the imprisoned Charles I. Continued royalist support for Charles II who renewed Montrose's commission as lieutenant-general and captain-general of Scotland. Executed by covenanters (1650).
