Son of William Douglas and Anne Hamilton, taking his mother's surname. Served at court under a number of monarchs. Chosen one of sixteen Representative Peers of Scotland. Appointed Lord of Bedchamber by King William, fighting with him in several campaigns. Appointed Lord Clerk Register (1696, 1733). Made Lord of Bedchamber under King George I. Opposed to Union. Died in London (1739)
