Ninth Lord Somerville. Embarked on grand European Tour and returned via London where he spent two months. Joined Covenanting army (1639). On invasion of England appointed Governor of Durham. Raised to rank of lieutenant-colonel (1644). Marched south and occupied Morpeth. Travelled to Yorkshire (1644). Lived remainder of life in Scotland, primarily in Edinburgh. Died 1677 and buried at Holyroodhouse.
