Educated at Selkirk grammar school and University of Edinburgh. Apprenticed to Alexander Nesbit, an Edinburgh surgeon. Moved to London where he attended various medical lectures. Ultimately settled in Scotland (1721) where he pioneered clinical teaching of medicine. Died 1779. Grandfather of Sir Walter Scott.
