Raised in Stirling and attended grammar school before graduating MA from the University of Glasgow (1745). Went to the Netherlands. Moved to London where he became a tutor. Left London for France in 1754. Ultimately returned to Scotland to take up an academic post at the University of Glasgow. Held membership to the royal societies of London where he was elected elected FRS in 1759.
