Elected as MP for his county of Fifeshire in 1741 where he voted with the Opposition until Walpole's fall. Later influenced by nephew, William Murry and went over to the Government. Unsuccessfully stood for Aberdeen Burghs but when opponent died gained seat in 1751, holding his seat until death in 1766.
