Educated at Eaton. Various military positions before entering politics. MP for Aberdeenshire 1754-68. Spent majority of 1760s with his regiment in the West Indies and North America. Returned to Britain in 1766 and was quite vocal in the American debates having been there and acquiring land. Failed to obtain a seat in Parliament in 1768. He was later elected an MP for Kincardineshire 1774-88.
