Father's career as a lawyer enabled Anstruther to enter politics. Stood, and won, election to Parliament for Anstruther Easter Burghs (1708). Held seat between 1708-12 and again in 1713-15. Travelled to Europe in 1712 for health reasons. When he recovered his seat in 1713 he was classified as a Hanoverian. Elected MP for Fifeshire (1715) and consistently voted for administration. He left parliament in 1741 and died at Elie House in 1753.
