Joined both Scottish and Dutch service, promoted to general. Early stages of his political career was subservient to ambition, exploited connections to leading Scottish Court peers. Selected by Sir John Anstruther as the Tory candidate for Anstruther Easter Burghs, gaining his seat on petition. Was a relatively inactive member. Failed to regain his seat on petition in 1713. Returned to military pursuits, becoming the Earl of Mar's adviser during 1715 rebellion. Died in exile.
