Joined 22nd Food command, dismissed from army by king in 1756. Elected MP for Ayr Burghs, with support of Duke of Argyll. Held seat between 1749 and 1754. Supporter of the Government who fostered the alliance between Bute and Pitt. One of six Members nominated by the Edinburgh committee to consult on the introduction of the Scottish militia bill. On succession of George III Erskine was offered various employment opportunities, ultimately choosing the army. MP for Anstruther Easter Burghs 1754-65. Died at York 1765.
