A professional soldier, entered politics at behest of cousin, Anstruther, John. Was an MP for Anstruther Easter Burghs 1715-41 and 1747-54. Voted with the Administration except on the peerage bill (1719). Anstruther's only known vote is in 1737 when he alone supported proposal to punish Edinburgh for the Porteous riots. Earned him the lasting dislike of most of his countrymen. Lieutenant-governor of Minorca (1733-47) which he travelled to quite frequently. Lost his seat in the election of 1753, at the age of seventy-four, but did not petition. Died 1760.
