Of Culloden. Sheriff depute of Edinburghshire. Lord Advocate depute (1716-25) and lord advocate (1725-37). Lawyer closely connected with Duke of Argyll. Brought into parliament by Argyll for Ayr Burghs (1721-22) on petition. MP for Inverness Burghs (1722-37) but had to leave politics when he was elevated to the bench. Helped the Government during the 1745 Rising.
