Educated at King's College, Aberdeen. Principal clerk of the Exchequer (1705-8). Secretary to Prince of Wales of Scotland (1714-27). Confidential agent of Campbell, John (London) and Campbell, Archibald (London) 1. 30-year, uninterrupted, parliamentary career. MP for Inverness Burghs (1713-22), for Ayr Burghs (1722-34) and for Elgin Burghs (1734-41). Voted with Government since 1715, with exception of a motion in 1717 against one of Argyll's rivals. Retired from politics in 1741, died in 1768.
