Held a number of military positions including Captain of the 21st Foot (1702) and Colonel of the 9th Foot (1715-7). Made Governor of Edinburgh Castle (1738-45) and groom of the bedchamber 1727-45) . MP for Ayrshire 1727-41 where he regularly voted with the Government. Lost his seat during re-election of 1741. Travelled with King at outbreak of war of the Austrian succession. Died at Fontenay 1745.
