Little interest in politics, not even enrolled as an elector in Ayrshire when his cousin, the 4th Earl of Loudoun, put him forward as a candidate. Elected as MP for Ayrshire in 1754, holding seat until 1761. Completely guided by Loudoun and Argyll. Died 1786.
