Second Earl of Fife. Stood for general election for Banffshire (1754). At by-election of 1754 agreed to transfer Duff interest from James Abercromby to Andrew Mitchell in return for other favours from Newcastle. Did not long remain faithful to Newcastle, joining Pitt and Grenville in opposition. Returned unopposed 1761, attaching himself to, and remaining a faithful supporter of Grenville. Was abroad for quite a bit of parliamentary career. Gave up seat of Banffshire to his son in 1784 but stood for Elginshire seat (1784-90. Died 1809.
