Family were hereditary sheriffs of Bute - source of political influence despite financial debts. Links with Duke of Queensbury helped secure political positions. Stewart held seats for both Buteshire and Perthshire as MP 1708-9. Appointed a lord of the session and of justiciary. After taking seat in court of session seems to have played little further role in politics. No by-election writ ordered for either Buteshire or Perthshire in 1709. Died 1712.
