MP for Banffshire (1734-1754). Entered British army, quickly becoming colonel (1746). Appointed second-in-command of British forces in North America (1756), and later served briefly as commander (1758). Promoted to lieutenant-general (1758) and general (1772). Son of Abercromby, Alexander.
