First Duke of Roxburghe. Played significant part in Scottish politics from 1702. Travelled to London to counter the disinformation being spread about him (and others) by James, Duke of Queensberry. Among numerous other political involvements, was elected one of the sixteen representative peers of Scotland, was sworn of the privy council (1709) and served as one of the lords regent (1714). Post-1727 lived in political retirement. Died at home in Roxburghshire (1741).
