Attended Scottish parliament and voted a straight Court line over the Union. Earned him place in First Parliament of Great Britain (1707-8). Remained loyal to court during his representation of Clackmannanshire (1708-10). During election enjoyed support of Earl of Mar, though fell out by 1713. Dalrymple had to wait until 1722 to return to Parliament, this time as MP for Wigtown Burghs (1722-27) and Wigtownshire (1727-41). Initially supported administration but went into the opposition in 1733. Died 1744.
