Began political career as a staunch Presbyterian. Sat in Scottish parliaments, with votes on Union following the Squadrone pattern. Rewarded with seat at the first Parliament of Great Britain (1707-08). Did not put himself forward in 1708 general election for Clackmannanshire. Returned to the commons in 1713 as MP for Clackmannanshire, adding the Earl of Mar's interests to his own. Classed as a Hanoverian - a Whig. Did not stand for re-election. Participated in the 1715 Rising. Fled to the Continent. Died 1739.
