Left Scotland when he was 3 months old. Father died at Newcastle when he was 2, and until he was 17 he travelled around England with his mother, who sold ‘gartering and other things’. Since then has travelled around as a piper. Caught begging in the North Riding of Yorkshire, 4 November 1740.
