Solicitor-general for Scotland (1725-37), Lord Advocate )1723-42), Lord of Session (1742-63. Was in France but returned to England 1717 and became involved in parliamentary politics by the Duke of Queensbury. MP Dumfriesshire (1722-41). Fell out with his patron and returned to parliament as MP for Tain (Northern) Burghs (1741-2). Lost his seat on petition though gained appointment as Lord justice clerk (1748-63). Died 1763.
