Entered British army at the age of 32 and was rapidly promoted through the ranks. MP for Dumfries Burghs (1754-61) on the interest of the Duke of Queensbury. Elected (unopposed) to seat of Dumfriesshire (1761-74). Supported Bute's administration but equally faithful to Grenville. When the administration changed, Douglas followed Grenville into opposition. Died in Dublin 1778.
