Commissioner of police in Scotland (1730-1755). Whig MP for Stirlingshire (1715-22), voting with the Government. Contested seat for Dunbartonshire (1722) but was unseated in January 1725 on petition by the Duke of Argyll. Returned to Parliament the following year in a by-election for Perthshire (April 1726-27), though lost the seat in the following years election. Died 1755.
