Called to the bar in 1745. Returned as MP for Dunbartonshire (1761-80, 1790-96) and taken into favour by the Earl of Bute. Edmonstone thus supported the Bute and Grenville Administrations. After 1765 voted with the opposition, transferring allegiance to successive Administrations. Also MP for Ayr Burghs (1780-90). Conscientious Member of the Parliament who sat on a number of committees. Died 1807.
