Apprenticed to an Edinburgh merchant (1677) and became a burgess (1684). Entered Scottish parliament (1702) as loyal supporter of the court. Rewarded with election to represent Edinburgh in first Parliament of Great Britain. Involved in various bills to protect Scottish economic interests. Did not stand for re-election and seat was taken by MacClellan, Samuel. Death of MacClellan in 1709 led to Johnstone's unopposed election to seat of Edinburgh. Did not stand for re-election in 1713. Died 1736.
