Famous Scottish Jacobite and suspected author of 'Memoirs Concerning the Affairs of Scotland' (1714). Joined Scottish Parliament (1702) and made privy councillor (1703). Went into opposition and remained disaffected with Court for remainder of Scottish parliamentary career. Vehemently opposed to Union. Claimed to seek parliamentary seat in Westminster to serve the Jacobite cause. Elected to Edinburghshire (Midlothian). Tried to encourage concerted actions by Scots members on national issues, unsuccessful as Scots divided on many lines. Re-elected in both 1710 and 1713, remaining heavily involved in parliamentary affairs. Hanoverian succession ended Lockhart's parliamentary career. Involved in Jacobite schemes of 1717 and 1719, then focused on resolving internal Jacobite dissension. Forced into exile (1727) further helping the Jacobite cause in exile. Returned to Britain and met with George II. Retired to estates in Scotland where he died, inexplicably, in a duel (1731).
