Financial difficulties dictated much of actions in life. Appointed as Lord Lyon (1692), title confirmed upon Union. Elected MP, at urging of the Lord Mar, for Fifeshire (1710-15). Classed as a Tory and as an episcopal Tory who pursued Scottish ambitions. Despite active campaigning in 1715 election, lost his seat. Died 1727.
