Educated at Lincoln's Inn (1708) and Clare, Cambridge (1711). Resided mainly in England. Held offices of Lord of Admiralty (1736-42), of Treasury 1746-54. Related to both the Pelhams and Duke of Argyll. Active career in parliament, holding seats for Pembrokeshire (1727-47), Nairnshire (1747-54), Inverness Burghs (1754-61). Had become weary of Parliment by 1761 but stood for Corfe Castle (1762-68) at behest of the Earl of Bute. Withdrew from Parliament upon dissolution in 1768. Died 1777.
